Background

A global pizza chain, was looking to further expand its operations in India and was seeking a deeper market penetration. They aimed to scale their presence in high-potential urban markets and wanted to work on an expansion plan. With a growing share of online orders and a surge in aggregator-driven demand, they were also looking for a system that could transform raw business data into actionable insights.

The pizza chain needed a platform to understand order trends, identify underserved demand zones, assess competitor proximity, and evaluate store performance across multiple cities.

Challenges

  • Identify new high-demand zones that fell outside their current trade areas—where customers were actively placing orders, but no store was nearby.

  • Analyze competitor presence and density and how they affected their store performance.

  • Deciding on outlet placement without a spatial layer made it harder to plan expansions or relocations based on existing market needs.

  • Identifying gaps in customer coverage and optimizing deliveries was challenging, as some high-potential areas remained hidden or underserved.

  • They needed a system that can seamlessly collate diverse business and PoI data from multiple sources.

Solutions

The pizza chain onboarded Dista Insight, our geospatial analytics platform, to pivot their market expansion strategies and maximize customer coverage with location intelligence.

1. Map-based Visualization of Business Operations

The geospatial analytics software provided a 360-degree map-based visualization of the pizza chain’s present orders from internal systems and third-party aggregators. It enabled filtering order data by source, time, and order value, thereby helping stakeholders spot key demand patterns, analyze ordering trends, and focus on high-value orders. Leaders could also see specific data sets for a comparative and focused analysis.

2. Multi-Data Layering

The platform layered contextual geographic data—city boundaries, neighborhoods, store grids, and trade zones with high footfall—sourced from open datasets and Google Maps. This allowed the QSR to understand order density with respect to specific geographic areas. Customizable map layers also showcased competitor locations, retail hotspots, and tourist attractions, offering a rich visualization for identifying new potential markets.

3. Grid System and Competitive Mapping

The geospatial analytics system divided cities into grids of configurable sizes and showcased them with color-coded overlays indicating order volumes. This enabled granular performance monitoring and spatial benchmarking. Leaders could assess competitor presence within each grid and compare against their order data, helping identify saturated areas versus untapped zones.

4. Market Expansion Planning

The business leaders of the pizza chain could identify potential regions for store launches or relocations using aggregated data and spatial overlays. The system provided data on order demand and highlighted a lack of physical store presence that extended beyond existing trade areas. They leveraged this spatial intelligence directly to define and refine city-level expansion strategies.

5. Trade Zone Analysis and Management

Dista Insight digitized their trade zones to visualize their serviceable and non-serviceable areas. The AI/ML-based system created dynamic trade zones based on the distance parameter to streamline order allocation. This helped them define the serviceability of particular zones and improve resource allocation.

Dista’s geospatial analytics software overlaid POI data like competitor analysis, customer demographics and behavior insights, population, income index, etc., to derive trends and patterns. It also offered recommendations for site selection or reconfiguring trade zones for optimal coverage.
